Thailand retirement planning
4. Retire in Thailand Budget: Build a Recurring-Income Scenario
Can your retirement income support life in Thailand?
Only a personal, editable cash-flow model can begin to answer that. Do not start with a viral “retire in Thailand for X” claim. Start with your recurring income, your preferred housing, your healthcare needs, your travel pattern, your household, and your reserve.
MoveMoney calculates:
Recurring income
minus modeled monthly spending
= estimated monthly surplus or deficit
That is a pre-tax educational cash-flow model. It is not retirement, tax, investment, immigration, legal, or healthcare advice, and it cannot say whether you should retire.

Bangkok budget anchors—useful, not universal
BAANLYY’s July 2026 Bangkok cost-of-living guide publishes broad monthly guide ranges of THB 45,000–65,000 for one person living comfortably in a well-connected area and THB 80,000–120,000 for a couple. It also publishes higher family ranges where a car and international schooling are included. These are planning guides, not a promised retirement lifestyle, a visa threshold, or a personalized budget. Rent, healthcare, travel, household help, and imported goods can change the result substantially.
Use a Bangkok guide range as a first draft only. Then make it yours by selecting a realistic housing target and replacing each category with your own expected spending.
Retirement income: keep sources separate
Enter each recurring source individually:
- pension
- Social Security
- salary or consulting income, if any
- business income
- rental income, after the costs and risks you choose to include
- other reliable recurring income
Keep one-time home-sale proceeds, savings, and investments separate from monthly income. If you expect to draw from capital, show the draw as a monthly amount and run a higher-cost case. Do not treat a simple “months of capital” calculation as a financial plan.
Visa is a research item—not an assumption
The Royal Thai Consulate-General in Los Angeles publishes an e-Visa fee table that includes Non-O retirement and Non-OA long-stay retirement categories. For example, its public table lists USD 80 for a single-entry Non-O retirement visa and USD 200 for multiple-entry Non-O / Non-OA entries as shown on that page. Requirements, official fees, financial evidence, insurance requirements, extensions, and your application jurisdiction can change. Verify directly with the responsible Thai authority; separate government fees from any professional-service quote.
Sensitivities worth running before you commit
- Rent at your desired building versus a less central or smaller option
- Higher healthcare and insurance cost than your first quote
- Two additional U.S. trips in a year
- A stronger THB relative to your USD income (a sensitivity, not a forecast)
- A need to support family, replace furniture, or manage a pet emergency
- A month with no consulting or business income
FAQ
How much income do I need to retire in Thailand?
There is no one responsible number. Add your own expected categories and compare them with your recurring income. Public Bangkok guide ranges can inform a first draft, but they do not replace your housing, health, visa, family, and travel facts.
Does MoveMoney calculate Thai taxes?
No. MoveMoney is a pre-tax cash-flow model. Cross-border tax treatment depends on facts such as residence, income source, remittance, and structure. Seek qualified U.S. and Thai tax professionals.
Is a Thailand retirement visa included in the calculation?
You can add verified government fees and a separately quoted professional fee, but MoveMoney does not recreate immigration eligibility or provide legal advice.
